Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)

A SAP is a qualified person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

What does a SAP do?

The fundamental responsibility of a SAP is to proivde a comprehensive face-to-face assessment and clinical evaluation to determine what level of care the employee needs towards resovling issues associated with his/her substance use.

What happens after the face-to-face assessment and clinicial evaluation

After the initial assessment, the SAP recommends a plan of action that includes education and/or treatment, along with drug testing for individuals in safety-sensitive positions

What happens when all the conditions have been met

The SAP will make a determination based on all information provided if the employee can return-to-duty

How do I schedule an appointment

The first step is to locate a SAP in NAADAC directory, the FMCSA clearinghouse, or online. Your DER will also make a referral. Once a preferred SAP has been selected, the employee must call and learn more information directly. Once it has been decided the SAP will be designated, the employee will confirm the designation through the clearinghouse and the process will begin.
